Teeth whitening treatments have recently skyrocketed in popularity thanks to their fast and effective results
Just as we all have different hair, skin and eye colour, the colour of our teeth is also unique! Some are more naturally yellow in colour than others, and some can stain and discolour more easily.
Professional teeth whitening treatments from Anthony Spink Dental Suite can lighten your teeth dramatically in only one sitting and patients will notice a difference almost immediately. However, this treatment isn’t classified as a permanent solution and with our modern day health habits, your teeth can easily become re-stained.
How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening is a chemical process that helps to lighten teeth by breaking up the chemical bonds that make up the stains and discolouration on the surface of your teeth. The bleach is only placed onto tooth enamel, which is dead (like your nails and hair) so your gums and teeth are protected.
In-office teeth whitening contains either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide. As an experienced and qualified dentist, Dr Anthony Spink can safely use a higher-grade whitening gel to help his patients to achieve a brilliantly white smile, fast! Dr Spink will also custom mix the whitening gel to suit not only your smile but your facial aesthetics too.
Because teeth whitening can only whiten your natural teeth, unfortunately, your current restorations like crowns, bridges and dentures cannot be lightened and will need to be replaced to match the new shade.
Why do my teeth stain?
There are two types of staining or discolouration: extrinsic (external) which affects the teeth from the outside and intrinsic (internal) which will stain the internal structure of the tooth.
- Extrinsic – this staining occurs when microscopic pits and holes in the outer layer of enamel on our teeth catch debris. Although our enamel is quite durable, (even if your oral hygiene is great) it is still susceptible to staining.
- Intrinsic – this can be due to dental fillings, internal trauma to the tooth or severe decay. If your tooth has had a large filling or sustained trauma, it can turn a different colour to your other surrounding teeth.
There are many environmental issues that can cause our teeth to stain or discolour. Some reasons our smile might turn dull can include:
- Smoking tobacco
- Plaque and tartar build-up
- Eating highly pigmented foods like cherries and blueberries
- Drinking tea, coffee and red wine
- Trauma to your teeth
